My StoryWorth – 58. Bob, what advice would you give your 20 year old self?

Filed under: My StoryWorth — Tags: — Bob @ 1:02 pm

Well, let’s see…

In 1964 I was 20 years old and going steady with my girlfriend, Barbara.
I went to Northeastern University from September, 1963 to January, 1964. Of course, in ’64, I was all through going to NU, and I have gone over that fact before in my writings.
In January, 1964, I worked at Gilbert Freeman Co. as an Assistant Samples Manager. I cut swatches of handbag and shoe liner material, and stuck them to cards to give to prospective buyers by the salesmen.  I stayed there until February, 1964 and quit because they didn’t give me the promotion they promised when I was hired, at $70/wk.

In February, 1964 until March, 1964, I went to work at Rubin’s Men’s Shop as a clerk. The store was just opposite Wellington Hill Street off Blue Hill Ave. They went out of business, and I was out of a $65/week job. I got scolded by the owner for going to my Aunt Ida’s funeral after he told me he wouldn’t give me the time off to do that.
In March, 1964, I started my own Grounds Maintenance business, cutting grass, etc. I bought my 1952 Chevy pick-up truck. This lasted until September, 1964, and I shut the business down, even though I was making a little money, because I started going to Boston Stenotype Institute.
Then in September, 1964 I started going to Boston Stenotype Institute for Court Stenography, and went until January, 1967. I went to classes all year long, Summers included, to hurry things along, and start making some money at this job.

So, that’s about it for a quite busy year for my education and my employment.
Now, as to any advice I might have given myself back then? Well…  maybe getting my attention with a small ball-peen hammer applied to my forehead…

…to try to get me to buckle down and apply myself, and work towards something worthwhile for my future!
